The Hung King Festival is a major Vietnamese celebration honoring the nation’s legendary founding rulers, the Hung Kings. Recognized by UNESCO, this event is a vibrant expression of ancestral pride and cultural unity. Read the full article with Vietnam Motorbike Tour Expert to explore its history, significance, and what to expect when attending this meaningful celebration.
The Hung King Festival, also known as Hung Kings Commemoration Day, is one of the most important and sacred national holidays in Vietnam. This annual celebration honors the legendary Hung Kings, who are regarded as the founding fathers of the first Vietnamese state, Van Lang. More than just a public holiday, the festival reflects the deep-rooted tradition of ancestor worship and the strong sense of national identity among the Vietnamese people.
The festival serves as a powerful symbol of national unity and shared identity. In 2012, the worship of the Hung Kings in Phu Tho was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting its deep spiritual and cultural significance to the Vietnamese people. The celebration is not just a historical remembrance but a living tradition that reinforces a collective sense of pride and connection to ancestral roots.
The origin of the Hung King Festival is rooted in ancient Vietnamese legend and national mythology. According to traditional beliefs, Lac Long Quan, a dragon lord, married Au Co, a fairy goddess. She gave birth to a sac containing 100 eggs, which later hatched into 100 sons – the ancestors of the Vietnamese people, known as the “Dragon and Fairy descendants.” Their eldest son became the first Hung King and founded the kingdom of Van Lang in what is now Phu Tho Province.
The Hung Kings are believed to have ruled for 18 generations from 2879 BC to 258 BC, during a period often referred to as the Hong Bang Dynasty. This era marked the early formation of Vietnamese civilization, laying the foundations for social organization, agriculture, culture, and the Red River civilization.
Over time, the Vietnamese people established the tradition of commemorating the Hung Kings on the 10th day of the third lunar month each year. The festival not only honors these legendary rulers but also reinforces national unity, cultural continuity, and respect for ancestral roots.

The Hung King Temple Festival takes place annually from the 8th to the 11th day of the third lunar month, with the main celebration held on the 10th day. This date has been officially recognized as a national public holiday in Vietnam. In the Gregorian calendar, the festival usually falls in April.
The main ceremonies are held at the Hung Kings Temple Complex on Nghia Linh Mountain in Viet Tri City, Phu Tho Province, about 90 kilometers northwest of Hanoi. Considered the ancestral land of the Vietnamese people, this sacred site is the spiritual heart of the festival.
Visitors traveling from Hanoi can reach Phu Tho Province by private car, taxi, bus, or motorbike. The journey typically takes around two to three hours by motorbike, depending on traffic conditions.
The Hung King Temple Festival is a harmonious blend of solemn rituals and vibrant cultural celebrations. Each year, thousands of pilgrims gather to honor the nation’s legendary founders through meaningful ceremonies and traditional festivities.
Religious rituals form the spiritual core of the festival. The main ceremony begins with a grand procession from the foot of Nghia Linh Mountain up to the temples within the complex. Participants carry offerings such as incense, fresh flowers, bánh chưng (square sticky rice cake) and bánh giầy (round sticky rice cake).
The incense-offering ceremony is the most sacred moment, during which representatives and pilgrims express gratitude to the Hung Kings for laying the foundation of the nation.
Beyond the religious ceremonies, the festival is filled with vibrant cultural activities. Traditional art forms such as Xoan singing – recognized by UNESCO – are performed to honor the Hung Kings. Visitors can also participate in traditional games including bamboo swings, rice cooking contests, wrestling, and water puppet shows.
