Dong Ho folk painting is a traditional Vietnamese woodblock art form originating from Bac Ninh province, renowned for its use of natural materials like Do paper and ground scallop shells to depict scenes of daily life and social commentary. At Vietnam Motorbike Tour Expert, we have spent years guiding travelers through the Red River Delta, helping them look past the surface to understand the profound cultural stories etched into these unique prints.
For centuries, Dong Ho folk painting has served as more than just decoration; it is a mirror reflecting the soul of the Vietnamese countryside. Originating in Dong Ho village (Song Ho commune, Bac Ninh province) around the 16th–17th century, this art form holds a special place in the nation’s history.
Traditionally, these artworks were known as “Tet Paintings.” In the past, farmers would purchase them to decorate their homes for the Lunar New Year. The custom involved replacing old paintings with new ones to symbolically “see the old off and welcome the new,” bringing wishes for prosperity and luck into the household.
From our experience leading tours, Western visitors are often initially struck by the lack of perspective or 3D depth in the images. This is intentional. Unlike Western art, which often prioritizes anatomical accuracy and realistic perspective, Dong Ho folk painting focuses on “Spirit” (Thần) and “Nuance” (Sắc).
The art is conventional and symbolic. As noted in academic research regarding the preservation of this craft, craftsmen “paint in a broad-minded, but not in a realistic manner… mainly depicting the nuance but not the appearance of the object”. The goal is to capture the essence of the subject—the happiness of a pig, the bravery of a toad—rather than its literal physical form.
Another unique feature we encourage our guests to look for is Thi trung hữu họa (“Poetry in Painting”). You will often see Chinese or Chữ Nôm (ancient Vietnamese script) characters incorporated directly into the composition. These are not random; they are verses or couplets that explain the content, creating a subtle combination of literature and visual art that elevates the meaning of the print.

One of the reasons Dong Ho folk painting has been recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage is the incredible complexity of its materials. Everything used in the process comes directly from the Vietnamese landscape.
The foundation of every print is the Do paper, made from the bark of the Do tree. This paper is light, tough, and possesses remarkable longevity. According to technical studies on the craft, this paper is “anti-bacteria, anti-termite and very durable,” with records suggesting it can “last for 500 years” without becoming brittle.
To create the signature background, the paper is coated with Diep—ground scallop shells mixed with sticky rice paste. This creates a glittering, sparkling white background that changes under the light, a texture you simply cannot replicate with modern printing methods.
When we visit the artisan workshops, we see that the colors are entirely organic:
The woodblocks themselves are carved specifically from Jackfruit wood. This wood is chosen for being soft enough to carve intricate lines, yet durable and resistant to insects.
The printing process is fascinating to watch. It utilizes a “woodblock prone” technique where the colors are printed first in a specific order: Red, then Green, then Yellow, then White.
The Black outline is printed LAST. This final step is crucial to “cut off the lines” and define the shapes, locking the colors into place.
Travelers on our motorbike tours often buy these paintings as souvenirs, but the true value lies in understanding the symbolism. We have noticed that once visitors understand the irony or the wish behind the image, the painting becomes much more valuable to them.
Here is a breakdown of the most iconic Dong Ho folk painting works:
This is perhaps the most famous print. It depicts a procession of rats delivering gifts (fish, birds) to a fat cat so that their wedding procession may pass peacefully.
Meaning: It is a sharp satire of feudal corruption. It suggests that the weak (the rats/peasants) must bribe the strong (the cat/officials) just to survive and conduct their daily lives.
This painting shows a toad teaching a class of frogs or tadpoles.
Meaning: On one level, it satirizes scholars who recite books blindly without true understanding. However, it also honors the “Studious Tradition” and the deep Vietnamese respect for teachers. In mythology, the Toad is the “Uncle of the Heaven God,” giving the teacher figure high status.
A simple image of a boy sitting on a buffalo playing a flute.
Meaning: This represents the optimistic, peaceful agricultural life that many of our riders experience when driving through the rural north. The flute sound represents the soul’s echo reaching the sky, while the lotus leaf often depicted symbolizes purity.
A sow is depicted with Yin-Yang swirls on her side, surrounded by piglets.
Meaning: This is a classic “Tet” wish. It symbolizes abundance, fertility, and the harmony of nature (Yin/Yang) for the New Year.
For those joining us on a Red River Delta exploration, a stop at the village is highly recommended.
Traveler Insight: Many of our guests mention that visiting the village provides a “slow travel” experience that feels very different from the frantic pace of Hanoi. Seeing an artisan manually press the woodblock onto the glittering Do paper creates a tangible connection to the history we discuss on the road.

While Dong Ho folk painting is celebrated, we must be realistic about its future. It is currently listed for “Urgent Safeguarding” for a reason. The primary threat is not just a lack of cultural interest, but a hard economic reality.
As modern industry has grown, the village has seen a massive shift toward producing Votive Paper (burning paper for the dead), which is significantly more profitable than making traditional art. Research indicates that 95% of households in Dong Khe village have switched to making votive products to earn a living.
Consequently, the number of true masters is dwindling. Currently, only 3 households (totaling nearly 20 people) continue to practice the full painting craft professionally. Furthermore, natural materials like Diep (scallops) and specific Do bark are becoming harder to source and more expensive, putting further pressure on the remaining families.

Dong Ho folk painting is a resilient art form that captures the humor, hopes, and spirit of the Vietnamese people. By visiting the village or purchasing a print, you are helping to keep this fragile heritage alive against the tide of modernization.
